When she was 14, Mary Shelley – who would grow up to write Frankenstein – moved from her home in London to live with family friends, the Baxters. There, Mary met 16-year-old Isabel Baxter, who became her best friend and perhaps one of her first female romantic interests. Mary and Isabel explored ruined castles, play-acted their favourite figures from the French Revolution, and carved their initials together into a window-pane using a diamond ring.

You can learn more about Mary and her rarely talked about relationships with women in our latest podcast.
