I think a lot of people don’t understand that “I don’t see it” is not the same as “it doesn’t exist”. Like, I had people tell me LGBT people & relationships didn’t exist in the past, and when I pull out my queer history starter pack™ they go “Oh, I didn’t know”.

In one case someone was like, “How come there was no gay art at [historical period]” and I was like, but there was! You’re not familiar with it because of contemporary curation! The fact it’s not in museums you frequent doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. In some cases, it was revered at the time – or at least well known – but later deemed inappropriate, insufficient, politically inconvenient etc.

What I’m saying is, don’t let other curate your primary sources and then eat up their version of history, I guess.
