This is Pauli Murray and his dog, Black-and-White-Together-We-Shall-Overcome, hanging out together at Benedict College, South Carolina. The photo was taken around 1967 or 1968.
A few years earlier, in 1965, Pauli had become the first African-American person to receive a Doctor of Juridicial Science from Yale, making him Dr. Pauli Murray – to commemorate this, he more often called Black-and-White-Together-We-Shall-Overcome “Doc” for short.
To learn about Pauli’s other achievements – from developing ground-breaking legal strategies to fight racism and sexism; to becoming an Episcopal priest – as well as for a good chat about trans history, check out our podcast!
